Objective and Background:

My goal in this project was to learn to use silkscreen printing to create a piece of art that was precise, high-contrast and replicable.

Process and Outcome:

I had been working on a still life painting of this hand holding a pepper, and while I liked the sketch, I wanted to try a new way to translate it. I started learning the silkscreen technique from a printmaker, and I simplified the drawing in my original painting to exist with more lines and contrast and fewer tones. I ultimately replicated this print 30 times using different ink tones and layers to manipulate the color of the pepper and experimented with the base color using spray paint and sponge techniques.

Though I had worked with linocut printmaking in the past, I enjoyed the silkscreen technique because each version of the print felt more unique than the next, and with each iteration, I generated more ideas on how to manipulate the ink and tone to present variety and individuality in each print, regardless of its simple subject.
